The Women in Law Awards (WOZA) will be launched in Cape Town on 28 February. WOZA, which is the brainchild of the Director of Rehana Khan Parker and Associates, Rehana Parker, is said to honour and celebrate the achievements of female legal practitioners who have made a remarkable difference in the legal profession, by bringing together legal practitioners, in-house legal counsel, thought leaders, innovators, along with leaders from government and academia.
The WOZA website stated that the awards will enhance and advance female legal practitioners by recognising their achievements and hard work to conquer a traditionally male terrain. Among other things, the awards will foster a band of innovative and next generation female thought leaders. The awards will also empower, mentor and strengthen female legal practitioners to aspire to excellence.
Ms Parker, said she saw the need for the WOZA awards as South Africa does not have a stand-alone awards programme for women in law. She added that it is important for awards, such as WOZA to take place as they will be about recognising and celebrating the successes of women, including the trailblazers no one hears about.
Ms Parker said that members of the public can nominate any person with a law degree across the legal profession. The nominations process will be announced on 1 March through various media platforms, as well as on the WOZA website.
